Ohio law now states drivers must turn on their headlights whenever they use their windshield wipers.

“There was a law, and it stated during unfavorable atmospheric conditions, and it was somewhat left up to the interpretation of the motorist and the officer, so now the law is clear,” Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bret Henderson said.

The law went into affect at the beginning of the month, but officers are giving drivers a six-month grace period where they won’t give out citations.

“This time frame now is just to get people acclimated to the new law,” Henderson said.

An officer cannot pull you over if you don’t have your headlights on because it’s a secondary violation, meaning there has to be another violation, like speeding, for you to get stopped.

Then you’ll receive a ticket for the headlights which could cost you up to $150, but officials say it’s for your own safety.

“A day like today, for example, it was pretty dark and dreary out here.  So it’s gonna increase visibility, and it’s going to help every motorist our there.  Anytime you’re more visible on the road, it’s going to reduce traffic crashes,” Henderson said.

Officers will start handing out citations January 1.
